MICA
MICA (Medical/ICU Clinical Assistant) is an iOS app built using Swift and SwiftUI, designed specifically to address the unique clinical and organizational needs for my ICU. This unit-specific focus is a core design choice; however, the general concepts and modules are modular and designed to be adapted to accommodate any user’s needs and specific protocols. The strength of MICA lies in its expansive and adaptive concept. While designed for my specific ICU, the modular Swift architecture means that developers or clinicians from any unit (or even outside my hospital) can easily swap out modules, modify existing app protocols, or integrate entirely new calculation and documentation tools. This makes the platform a proof-of-concept demonstrating how tailored technology via an iOS application can be rapidly deployed to address specific bedside challenges, showing that the core logic can be repurposed and expanded upon to create a highly relevant clinical assistant for virtually any intensive care environment. Unlike generic enterprise software, MICA focuses on providing utility.
The four current modules cover areas of ICU workflow:
DEViCE Lite: Provides a structured, chronologically sorted logging system optimized for specific devices (like the Impella) to allow for highly accurate, easily editable tracking of crucial device parameters.
Fick Calculator: Delivers specialized hemodynamic calculations (Cardiac Output and Cardiac Index) using accurate formulas like Du Bois BSA, which is essential for timely patient assessment.
Phone Directory: Offers a centralized, direct contact list to cut down on communication delays and errors during critical situations.
UltraCalc: Functions as a rapid assessment tool for estimating the optimal Ultrafiltration (UF) rate necessary to achieve fluid balance goals for patients on Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).
